Today was entirely dedicated to the two noble camping arts of eating and floating downstream on tubes. As you lie back in crystal clear water gazing up into a clear blue sky warm in the sun with a full belly, you have to wonder how life could get any better.
Having floated downstream yesterday, I did a reccie upstream this morning. Much the same combinations of broad expanses of smoothly flowing river separated by short rapids. The river bed is broad and gravelly. There has been flooding in the past but in reality there is little flood debris considering how deep the gorge system is. During my walk the sky was overcast making photography difficult with the bright cloudy sky contrasting with the dark casuarinas and she-oaks.
However, by the time we all left for our walk upstream, the day was clear and bright. The water temperature is perfect for lying in, not requiring any level of activity to keep warm.
All up we probably covered 1km each up and downstream today and the broad river bed making the return journey easy as well. The navigable extent of the river is much greater. A couple we spoke to had canoed from far upstream to this point, and another group came in today with 6 canoes and were paddling to Kunderang Homestead, perhaps 30km downstream. They returned late today to collect their car (and trailer which would be a challenge if it still had the canoes in it) so we can only presume they made it.
Dinner
today was pork cutlets seasoned in lemon and peppers with new potatoes and seasonal vegetables. Dessert was freshly baked bread with guava jelly or honey to taste. The sun is setting behind the gorge rim, the birds are winding down, leaving the main activity to the cicadas and the river continues its babble.
So, what did you do today?
