Of all of the things we have done as a family, an old-style beach holiday hasn’t been one of them. I’m talking going away to a beach house and stack it full of people and sit there for a couple of weeks with no real plans.
There are possibly a number of reasons for this, but whatever they are, this was the time for the drought to end. Two weeks in a family house at Rainbow Beach with extended family and hangers-on. And just when you think it sounds a complicated dynamic, add in Christmas and New Year.
Recipe for disaster? Potentially, but anything but in actuality. Life has been a rhythm of beach swimming, dune exploring, walks, swims, and of course cooking and eating. Fantastic clear and warm weather has helped, with just the odd overnight shower to damp things down on occasion.
Obviously the beach is an attraction, spreading all the way from Inskip Point in the north, to Double Island Point in the east. Apart from the small part reserved for swimming, the remainder is 4WD accessible, and provides the main way for getting around.
Inland are vast tracts of coastal heath and forest, giving rise to streams and perched lakes. Perfect as a cooler fresh water alternative to the surf.
The locals still find time for all of the Christmas trimmings. Even the local caravan park resident manager puts on a Christmas lights display.
Of course, relaxed and unplanned it might be, but we still had to catch-up with a surprisingly large number of friends who just happened to be in the area doing all sorts of fun stuff.
Being at the gateway to Fraser Island, and having a large catamaran, we could hardly turn down an invite to combine a visit to one with a visit to the other. Even a local turned out to welcome us.
You might associate Rainbow Beach and Harvey Bay both with Fraser island, but it is the best part of a two-hour drive between the two. Plenty of entertainment for the kids, now starting to suffer from holiday fatigue as they near the end of the fortnight.
So the holidays draw to a close. I had a particularly short list of things to do, and I have managed almost none of it. Must have been a good break.
