A grey day in Freycinet

IMG_4646 Turns out we were supremely lucky with our penguin tour last night. While the weather may have been cold and blowy, at least it was dry. The damp pack this morning continued into a grey and dreary day. Not wet enough to really stop you doing anything, but everything is damp, including the spirits.

IMG_4644 Freycinet is not far from Bicheno and so we were soon into pottering in and out of the various little attractions even though we had a slow start working in and out of the showers. The hope was that if we spent enough time doing the little stuff the weather may clear in time to do the Hazards and into Wineglass Bay this afternoon.IMG_4652 It was not to be. Lunch came and went in the rain and we had run out of road. Opinion was divided on running away or staying local and trying again for tomorrow. Even though allegedly the camping is booked out from December to Easter with sites being allocated in July according to a lottery, the damp weather meant there was plenty of room and so the availability of a site at Honeymoon Bay sealed it for the stayers. Perhaps the weather will clear as promised and we will get our chance tomorrow.IMG_4673

IMG_4671 The country here is pink granite, with dramatic coastline facing the sea and a calm bay just inside.IMG_4656 Honeymoon Bay is on the inland water and so is barely moving. It is so calm you can actually see the tide lowering the water while you watch. There are wallabies nosing around the campsite. With the rain easing, really the only thing left to complain about are the friendly huge mosquitoes, as big as your fingernail, brown and thick. Well, they did warn us in the visitor centre.
